Two birds perched on a flowering branch, a motif found across centuries of Indian folk painting, miniature art and textile design, occupy the full face of this forest-green drum bag. The Songbird Circle is one of the most narrative pieces in our collection: quiet, considered, and full of meaning.
The Craft
The birds and blossoms on the Lippan disc are hand-sculpted in raised clay relief, with small mirrors set into the flowers and around the birds' bodies. The green ground is applied in layers before the clay forms are built on top. Raised relief work of this kind must fully dry before mirrors can be pressed in, it is a painstaking, multi-stage process that results in a disc with genuine three-dimensional texture you can feel as well as see.
