The Craft

These bags do not begin in a warehouse. They begin where the Kauna grass grows - along the marshes and waterways of Manipur in Northeast India - and they end in the hands of farming community artisans who have been making things from this grass for generations. The weaving comes first: a structure built by hand that is strong enough to carry everything you might put in it. The embroidery comes last: stitched by the same person, in thread chosen by that person, in a composition that reflects their own sense of what looks right. This bag is not mass-produced. It is made. There is a difference, and you can feel it.

Care

Store in a cool, dry place when not in use. The natural Kauna grass may lighten slightly over time - this is a characteristic of the material, not a defect. Each bag is handwoven and hand-embroidered - small variations in weave density and stitch placement are the honest signature of authentic handcraft. The natural Kauna grass construction gives this bag an inherent resilience - if compressed during travel or storage, it will gently restore itself to its original form within a few hours. This is not a feature added to the material. It is simply what the material is.
